Words by Fr. F.W.Faber.  Music and Harmony: Walter J. Pais 20-6-2011

Jesus gentlest Savior
God of might and pow'r
Thou Thyself art dwelling
In us at this hour.
Nature can not hold Thee
Heav'n is all too strait
For Thy endless glory
And Thy royal state.

Out beyond the shining
Of the furthest star
Thou art ever stretching
Infinitely far.
Yet the hearts of Children
Hold what worlds cannot
And the God of wonders
Loves the lowly spot.

Oh how can we thank Thee
For a gift like this
Gift that truly maketh
Heaven's eternal bliss.
Ah when wilt Thou always
Make our hearts thy home?
We must wait for heaven
"Ere the day will come.

Rev. F. W .Faber

Fr. Faber was a supporter of congregational singing and wrote his hymns in an age when English Catholics did not necessarily feel comfortable singing the hymns of their Protestant neighbors. So Faber, as a Catholic, expanded their hymns suitable for congregational singing and encouraged the practice

He was born on 28th June, 1814, at Calverly, Yorkshire,  where his grandfather, Thomas Faber, was vicar. He died on 26th September 1863  -    He was a follower of Blessed John Henry Newman    He  joined  the Roman Catholic Church in November 1845.
