So far, the exercises dealt with the Common Rhythm, which consists of
four beats to a measure. In this rhythm, the first beat gets a strong accent,
and the third beat gets a weaker accent. In language, we give stresses on
certain syllables of the word. When these stresses for a rhythmic pattern, the
arrangement is said to be poetry. The songs are a form of poetry, and the music
follows this rhythm of the poetry. This is common to all languages, and all
music of the different lands.
A poetic sentence like: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, has been formed in a Common
Rhythm. Each syllable of Twin kle is formed of two beats, represented by two crochets.
The word star is prolonged and gets two beats, and so represented by a Minim,
or half note.
In this lesson, we introduce a dotted minim, which consists of three
beats. So the word "Glory" which has two syllables, could have
a dotted minim for "Glo" and one crochet for "ry", which
could be represented in a musical line.
As every form of learning has many smaller components, it is necessary to
learn them in small doses, so that the complete information can be digested. One
needs patience to reach to the end. In the end, you will be able to sing the
whole song on your own, just by reading the notation, and also write the music
in your mind, on to a page, with notation. If you have been gifted with music,
and get melodies in your head, then it will be unfortunate, if you can not
communicate it to others. Just think, in order to record the song, you might
need a software to record it, gadget to play it, and send it by email to another
person. But if the power supply goes off, you are nowhere. But the paper and pen
is always with you. You can draw staves on a paper and write the music with the
words, and store it. You can post it by mail. Nowadays there is software to
write music, and you can use it. Classical music was written this way, and the
manuscripts were preserved and today, musicians can reproduce them, because they
know how to read this music and you can hear the orchestra playing - of course
on a modern gadget.
Have patience, and determination to achieve your goal.
